Coahoma prepares for huge challenge at East Mississippi

CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College has faced challenges in the MACJC Conference. The Tigers will face their biggest challenge of the season against the defending MACJC Champions and three-time national champion, East Mississippi Community College.

Coahoma is coming off a 30-14 loss to Itawamba Community College. Coahoma had 393 yards of total offense including 217 passing yards and 176 rushing yards.

Josh Johnson (Opelika, AL) had his fifth 100-yard game of the season. He had 23 carries for a season high 160 yards and a touchdown. Johnson has 151 carries for 711 yards and four touchdowns so far, this season.

Trey Mitchell (Knoxville, TN) was 15 of 28 for 162 yards last week. He has completed 87 of 177 passes for 1070 yards, three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

"Trey, Josh and Jaylin Jones (Bay Springs, MS) take a pounding every week but they come back stronger and give us great performances," said Coahoma Head Coach Steven Miller.

East Mississippi, ranked number 7, is coming off a 61-38 loss to Northwest Mississippi Community College. They had 529 yards of total offense.

Lindsey Scott led the Lions with 26 of 45 passes for 310 yards, 26 carries for 125 yards and four touchdowns. Scott is a transfer quarterback from Louisiana State University (LSU).

"Scott will be just as seasoned as any other quarterback we've faced," said Miller. "He will lead his team and make a lot of plays. It's a challenge for our defense to take on great athletes and talented quarterbacks."

The Lions have a lot options besides Scott on offense. Tyrell Price, Calvin Keys, Mike Williams and Kirt Merritt are an arsenal of weapons that averaging over 500 yards of total offense and over 49 points a game.

Coahoma's defense must get ready for a high-powered offense. Antonio Nelson, Cecil Cherry and Rejohn Franklin will look to make big stops and create turnovers.

The Tigers are looking to get one of the biggest win in school history. It will not be easy taking on an angry Lions team on their Homecoming.

"Anytime you take on a team that is good and talented, the only thing that can help you is to stay composed, create turnovers and don't get turnovers. If you do those things, you have a chance to beat a high ranked team," said Miller.

The game is set for this Saturday Oct. 21, at 2:00 p.m. at Sullivan-Windham Field in Scooba, MS.

The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch or tune in at WCQC 91.3.
