The Coahoma Tigers fought hard against the Jones Bobcats in a closely contested game that remained tight through the first half before the Bobcats pulled away in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 16-31 loss for Coahoma. Despite the defeat, the game was highlighted by a record-setting performance from Coahoma kicker Damian Gonzalez, who made history with two 53-yard field goals, breaking the school record. Gonzalez added a 36-yard field goal, accounting for 10 of Coahoma's points.
Gonzalez's all-around kicking performance was extraordinary, totaling 661 yards: seven punts for 259 yards, including a booming 60-yarder; five kickoffs totaling 260 yards, averaging 52 yards per kick; and 142 yards from field goals, with two 53-yard makes and one 36-yarder. After Gonzalez's first 53-yard field goal, Head Coach Terrence Metcalf pulled him aside with words of encouragement, "I told Damian to never doubt himself and to remember that all things are possible through God," said Metcalf. "His consistency and composure under pressure were phenomenal, and I'm proud of the way he stepped up for us tonight."
In addition to Gonzalez's heroics, Ashton Strother found the end zone with a powerful rushing touchdown, and Rahmaan Rinkin contributed defensively with a crucial interception that helped keep the Tigers in the game through the first half.
Despite strong individual performances, the Tigers couldn't keep up with the Bobcats in the latter stages of the game, as Jones capitalized on key opportunities to extend their lead in the fourth quarter. However, Coach Metcalf emphasized the positives, highlighting the resilience and determination shown by his players. "We saw some great individual efforts that we can build on," Metcalf said. "We'll take the lessons from this game and use them to come back stronger."
The Coahoma Tigers will aim to bounce back next week on the road against Holmes, with kickoff set for 6:30 pm on September 12, 2024.
