The Coahoma Tigers (0-3) fought valiantly in a game filled with high-energy plays and nail-biting moments but ultimately fell to the Holmes Community College Bulldogs (3-0) with a final score of 42-23 on Thursday night.
Coahoma struck first as
Ashton Strother led a quick 46-yard drive that ended with his 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Tigers ahead early in the first quarter, 7-0.
Holmes responded with a series of touchdowns, including three from quarterback Chase Richardson, pushing the Bulldogs to a 20-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Refusing to back down, Coahoma roared back in the second quarter. Damion Gonzalez nailed a 37-yard field goal, and Strother connected with
Deshaun Catron for a 15-yard touchdown and
Brandon Johnson for a 49-yard touchdown, tying the game at 23.
The battle continued into the fourth quarter with Coahoma trailing by just five points. Holmes pulled away late, with Tavares Wade breaking loose for an 18-yard touchdown run and B.J. Johnson securing the win with a 6-yard touchdown catch, extending the lead to 42-23.
Ashton Strother was relentless, throwing for 278 yards and two touchdowns, with
Brandon Johnson leading the receiving corps with 100 yards and a touchdown on four catches.
Jakevion Jones showed explosive speed, rushing for 84 yards on just seven carries.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Brandon Hall racked up nine tackles, while
Ryan Kirkwood made a key interception that kept Coahoma in the game early on. The Tigers' defense showed grit, with multiple players stepping up to make big stops.
The Tigers will return home to face Northwest on September 19, looking to channel the energy and determination they've shown on the road. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at James E. Miller Stadium.
