Under the bright lights and in front of a packed crowd at James E. Miller Stadium, the Coahoma Tigers put up a spirited fight but fell short in a 35-16 loss to Northwest Mississippi Community College. Despite the result, the Tigers showed heart and determination.Â
From the opening whistle, Coahoma looked ready to make a statement. After Northwest took an early 7-0 lead, quarterback
Ashton Strother orchestrated an 83-yard drive that electrified the home crowd. Strother found
Chris Davis for a stunning 23-yard touchdown pass, leveling the score at 7-7 and sparking hope across the stadium.
On defense, linebacker
Jerrell Goodlow was a force to be reckoned with. He led the charge with nine tackles and a crucial interception, keeping the Tigers in the hunt. Coahoma's defense forced two key turnovers and applied constant pressure to slow Northwest's offense.
Special teams added to the fight, as kicker
Damian Gonzalez nailed three field goals, including a pivotal 33-yarder late in the third quarter that cut Northwest's lead to 12 points. Gonzalez's clutch kicking kept the Tigers within striking distance as the game progressed.
Although the Tigers couldn't complete the upset, their effort on both sides of the ball was evident. Strother finished the game with 158 passing yards and a touchdown, while Davis led the receiving corps with 64 yards. Coahoma battled until the end, leaving fans optimistic about what's to come.
Coahoma will travel to take on East Mississippi in their Homecoming matchup on September 28th at 2:00 p.m., with hopes of spoiling the celebrations.
