Lady Trojans Huge Second Half Proves Too Much for Lady Tigers

MOORHEAD– Coahoma Community College entered the final game of their season with hopes of a win against Mississippi Delta Community College. The Lady Tigers had an electrifying start, but the Lady Trojans outgunned Coahoma; securing an 86-77 victory for MDCC on Thursday Night.

Walneika Holmes and Lameka President set the momentum with five straight points giving Coahoma a 6-0 lead. Mississippi Delta bounced back with Natanya Wilkerson knocking down a three-pointer bringing MDCC neck and neck with Coahoma. CCC would soon answer with an explosive 7-0 run. President and Dzondria Young scored a pair of layups extending Coahoma's lead to 13-5. The Lady Tigers maintained a 20-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

It was a different story in the 2nd quarter as Mississippi Delta went on a 9-0 run. Alexis Augustus knocked down a jumper giving the Lady Trojans a 34-26 lead. The Lady Trojans outscored Coahoma 27-16 in the second quarter. Keyara Hinton scored five straight points cutting MDCC's lead to 42-36 at the half.

The Lady Trojans (3-17, 2-10 MACJC North) started the 3rd quarter with a 12-0 run. Augustus and Wilkerson scored a pair of layups extending Mississippi Delta's lead to 54-37. The Holmes Sisters (Fredricka and Walneika) got the Lady Tigers back in the game, scoring five straight points bringing the Lady Trojans within Coahoma's sights with a score of 54-45. 

Mississippi Delta soon rebounded; pulling away with a 17-1 run. Patrisha Lollis and Cyletria Rice scored back-to-back layups giving the Lady Trojans their biggest lead at 71-46. Coahoma wouldn't lay down easily; making adjustments late in the 4th quarter with a 13-2 run. Hinton and Geneva Walker scored a pair of baskets cutting MDCC's lead further. Mississippi Delta was fortunate that time ran out in the game; securing MDCC's victory.

Mississippi Delta had three players scoring in double figures. Wilkerson led the Lady Trojans with 19 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Rice finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Augustus finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Coahoma had three players scoring in double figures. Walneika Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 34 points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals. Fredricka Holmes finished with 12 points and three rebounds. President finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Coahoma finished the season (2-20, 0-12 MACJC North). The Lady Tigers are losing one sophomore (Fredricka Holmes) but return six players next season. Head Coach Danetra Forrest is looking for bigger and better things in the 2018-19 season.
