CLARKSDALE - The CCC Gridiron Tigers could not overcome a powerful Northeast rushing attack Thursday evening at James E. Miller Stadium, falling by a final of 42-14. The win was the first of the year for Northeast.
A tight game appeared to be shaping up early. After Northeast put up a quick 7, CCC responded with a scoring drive of its own. Rodney English capped the Coahoma push to the house by lofting a pass to the edge of the endzone from 22 yards out at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Greg Johnson leapt high in the air and made a tremendous one-handed catch to help get CCC on the board. It was the first TD catch of the year for Johnson.
The tie would not last long though. Northeast capitalized twice in the 2nd quarter after the English-Johnson TD and took a 21-7 advantage to the locker rooms. They would put 3 more scores on the board to open the 2nd half before Dominic Marino was able to take a QB keeper 36 yards to the end zone halfway through the 4th. It was Marino's second TD rush from 20+ yards in as many games.
Northeast scored 5 of its 6 touchdowns on the ground in getting its first W under head coach Greg Davis. The Booneville squad was led by RB Tiberias Lampkin, who used 15 carries to pile up 114 yards. NEMCC QB Kendrick Doss ran for 73 yards and threw for 197 in the contest.Â
Marino finished 14 of 25 for 98 yards in the air and added 68 yards rushing. English finished 3 of 6 for 29 yards and the TD to Johnson. Monterrious Davis and Deonta Williams each registered a sack in the contest.Â
CCC next takes on Itawamba October 3 in Fulton. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30. A live broadcast will be available through Delta Force Radio and coahomasports.com.Â
