Football Pushes Southwest To The Brink, Falls In Overtime

Team now prepares for home finale on Thursday

SUMMIT - The CCC Football Tigers pushed the Southwest MS CC Bears to the brink Saturday evening at John Hurst Stadium in Summit, forcing overtime before ultimately falling 17-10.

CCC got off to a good start in its 2nd Saturday road game in as many weeks. After SMCC missed 2 early field goal attempts, Dominic Marino marshalled the Tiger forces downfield to strike for 6 with under 2 minutes to go in the first quarter. The scoring push was highlighted by a 40-yard Marino scamper to escape a potential safety and then his 15-yard sneak-and-dive to cross the SMCC goal line. It was the 3rd rushing TD in the last 4 games for the Sarasota native.

SMCC would break through late in the second quarter. After the SMCC defense forced a CCC fumble, QB Casey Haygood capitalized by throwing a 42-yard TD pass to get the Bears on the board. Kicker Reed James, who missed 3 total field goals in the contest, would then register his only make on a 22-yarder in the first half's closing seconds to put the score at 10-7 SMCC going to the break.

Two good defenses posted zeroes in the 3rd before CCC finally broke a 15+ minute scoreless streak on a 36-yard FG by Kian Richard early in the 4th. With the score 10-10 late, Marino and RB Steven Barnes methodically moved the ball downfield to set up a potential game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired. Richard's 2nd attempt of the evening just barely sailed wide though, and the game went to overtime.

The extra period would belong to SMCC. They scored on a wide receiver pass early in their first possession and then disrupted the CCC attack on the chance to equalize. The win was the 3rd of the year for the Bears and their first at home.

The Tigers return to Clarksdale this Thursday for the 2015 home finale vs. the Holmes CC Bulldogs (2-5). Kickoff at James E. Miller Stadium is slated for 7 pm.
