CLARKSDALE- Coahoma and Northeast Mississippi went head-to-head in 'The Battle Of The Tigers.' Northeast played an outstanding 1st half, but Coahoma's defense took charge of the 2nd half in a 65-59 victory on Thursday night at the Pinnacle.
Northeast took an early 9-6 lead with a three-pointer by Haley Vick.
Coahoma came back and took an 11-9 lead on consecutive baskets by
Mary Wilkins and
Brailyn Tate.
Dominque Caldwell stepped up for Northeast with consecutive jumpers. Northeast took a 20-18 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
Northeast took charge in the 2nd quarter by outscoring Coahoma 19-10. De'Sha McGloster stepped up by scoring consecutive layups extending the lead to 39-28 at the half.
Northeast got their most significant lead 42-30 with a three-pointer by Takeria Newson.
Coahoma bounced back with a 10-0 run to end the 3rd quarter. Amara Strong and
Iitasha Paty scored consecutive layups cutting the lead to 47-46. Coahoma outscored Northeast 18-8 in the 3rd quarter.
Tate got things going in the 4th quarter for Coahoma with a jumper. Coahoma took a 48-47 lead with 8:56 remaining.
Northeast answered with consecutive baskets by Caldwell. The Lady Tigers took a 52-48 lead with 7:57 remaining.
Tate scored consecutive jumpers to tie the game 52-52 with 6:38 remaining.
Coahoma had a 62-59 lead with 1:03 remaining, Northeast had a chance to cut the lead, but
Dasia Harden forced a turnover. The Lady Tigers made three of four free throws to put the game away.
Northeast Mississippi (3-14, 1-6 MACJC North) had three players that scored in double figures.
Caldwell led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, Vick finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists, & Newson scored 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two assists.
Coahoma had four players that scored in double figures.
Wilkins led the Lady Tigers with 17 points and three rebounds, Tate finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Jurnee McLaurin scored 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals, &
Ayani Cockrell scored 10 points and five rebounds.
"Everything starts with 100 percent effort. We didn't give that effort in the 1st half," said Coahoma Head Coach
Stephanie Murphy. "We wore them down in the 2nd half with our pressure defense. I was very happy with the 2nd half effort. God is showing his faithfulness and favor. We are being rewarded for our work ethic. We give glory to God for that."
Coahoma goes to (9-8, 3-4 MACJC North) on the season.
The Lady Tigers will battle Northwest Mississippi Community College in an MACJC North matchup. The game is scheduled on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at the Pinnacle, and tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch as well as on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
