Lady Tigers Hold On to a Big Victory Against Lady Trojans

CLARKSDALE- The Coahoma Lady Tigers and Mississippi Delta Community College went head-to-head on Monday night in a hard-fought rivalry. Both teams eyed to get a big MACJC North division victory and bragging rights in the Mississippi Delta region. The Lady Tigers came up big on the free-throw line in the fourth quarter for a 68-61 win at the Pinnacle.

Coahoma had a 48-38 lead with 9:11 remaining in the game. Mississippi Delta battled back when Sabreya Lee scored consecutive baskets, bringing the score to 48-45 with 7:16 remaining. Coahoma answered with Amaria Strong scoring consecutive jumpers extending the lead to 61-50 with 3:34 remaining.

The Lady Trojans made one more comeback when Venita Williams scored consecutive layups, bring them within only five points of the Lady Tigers with 2:21 remaining.

Coahoma made five of eight free-throws in the last 2:11 to put the game away.

Mississippi Delta had its only lead of the game at 2-0 with a jumper by Antanisha Wade.

The Lady Tigers went on an early 12-0 run. Jurnee McLaurin knocked down three consecutive three-pointers giving Coahoma a 12-2 lead.

The Lady Trojans came back with consecutive layups by Lee cutting the lead to 17-14. Then Lee knocked down a three-pointer tying the game 17-17.

Coahoma changed the momentum with consecutive three-pointers by McLaurin and Jada Harris. Then Strong scored consecutive driving layups giving the Lady Tigers a 35-26 lead at the half.

The Lady Tigers had a hot start to the 2nd half by scoring the 1st six points. Ayani Cockrell scored consecutive driving layups to giving Coahoma, their largest lead 41-26.

Mississippi Delta cut the lead in half 43-36 with a jumper by Jaleila Gadison.

Coahoma answered with a three-pointer by McLaurin extending the lead to 46-36.

Mississippi Delta (5-12, 1-5 MACJC North) had four players that scored in double figures. Lee led the Lady Trojans with 16 points and six rebounds, Williams finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Wade scored 11 points, and four rebounds, and TeKeitris Honey scored 10 points and three rebounds.

Coahoma had three players that scored in double figures. McLaurin led the Lady Tigers with 22 points and three rebounds, Cockrell finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Strong scored 11 points and six rebounds.

"We were focused on getting a win and getting better as a team," said Coahoma Head Coach Stephanie Murphy. "Amaria (Strong) plays extremely hard and is fearless. She made some unbelievable plays for us, and I was very proud of her."

Coahoma goes to (8-8, 2-4 MACJC North) on the season.

The Lady Tigers will battle Northeast Mississippi Community College in an MACJC North matchup. The game is scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, at the Pinnacle and tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch as well as on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
