Coahoma Fail to Bring Down Northeast

CLARKSDALE- The Coahoma Baseball squad started a three-team MACJC road trip against Northeast Mississippi Community College in "The Battle of the Tigers." They had a tough start and could not recover as Northeast swept the doubleheader with a pair of 11-1 victories.

In Game One, Coahoma struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Northeast, giving up 11 runs. Northeast got things moving in the first inning. Braxton Miller homered on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring two runs.

Northeast (15-13, 5-7 MACJC) scored five runs in the sixth inning. Their big inning was driven by a single by Miller and a double by Anthony Lipsey.

Northeast tallied ten hits. Miller, Christa and Simmons Sowell all contributed multiple hits for the Tigers. Jake Christa was on the pitcher's mound for Northeast. He surrendered one run on four hits over six innings, striking out six and walking one.

Drew Smith led Coahoma with two hits in three at-bats. Brandon Herring led things off on the hill for the Tigers. He surrendered nine runs on nine hits over five and one third innings, striking out three. Davin Hetts threw one-third of an inning in relief.

In Game Two, Coahoma took an early 1-0 lead on a Drew Smith sacrifice fly. Northeast, however, scored 11 unanswered runs to end the battle in an 11-1 victory.

Northeast scored eight runs in the third inning. Their big inning was driven by home runs by Lipsey and Hayes Hansford, a single by Braxton Miller and an error on a ball put in play by Sowell.

Tyler Samaniego led Northeast with two hits in two at-bats. Cooper Cox led things off on the pitcher's mound for Northeast. He surrendered one run on two hits over five innings, striking out five and walking one.

Hibler and Drew Smith all had one hit to lead Coahoma. Diego Benitez started the game for the Tigers. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 runs on seven hits and striking out two. Rodney Hibler threw one and one-third innings out of the bullpen.

Coahoma goes to 16-12 (2-8 MACJC) on the season. The Tigers will continue their road trip against Copiah-Lincoln Community College in an MACJC doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, 2019 in Wesson, Miss. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
