Lady Tigers Deliver Good Showing in Camden

CAMDEN, AR- Coahoma Community College Women's Basketball got the 2019-20 season rolling against South Arkansas University Tech. The Lady Tigers stayed at a comfortable lead but later overcame a furious comeback by the Lady Rockets. They also had to endure multiple players fouling out in an 86-81 season-opening victory in the Today's Power Tip-Off Classic.

Coahoma achieved a commendable lead with 69-51. Questionable fouls called on Coahoma gave the Lady Rockets some hope. South Arkansas Tech outscored Coahoma 30-17 in the 4th quarter. Christiana Gibbs scored 16 points all in the second half. The Lady Tigers had seven players fouled out and had only three players going strong with one minute remaining.

South Arkansas Tech had three players to score in double figures. Devena Smith led the Lady Rockets with 27 points. Mikeya Haygood tallied 11 points.

Three of the Lady Tigers scored in double figures. Jurnee McLaurin led the Lady Tigers with 30 points and six rebounds. Brailyn Tate tallied 14 points and nine rebounds. Amaria Strong scored 10 points.

The next day, the ladies refocused and refueled for their matchup against Connors State College (Okla). The Cowgirls cooked up a hot start then surpassed the Lady Tigers' outstanding second-half comeback that resulted in Connor State's 66-55 victory.

Coahoma was off to a slow start and, as a result, fell behind, 36-20 at the half. They outscored the Cowgirls 24-21 in the third quarter. Strong and Tate made consecutive baskets, which cut the lead to 47-44.

Valencia Watson, Mary Wilkins, and McLaurin made consecutive baskets to jump off the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers took a 53-49 lead with 5:22 remaining in the game.

Connors State scored eight unanswered points to secure the victory. De'Asia Reid and Jasmyn Taylor boosted the score with consecutive layups.

Three players scored in double figures for Connors State. Chalynn Mayes led the Cowgirls with 16 points and eight rebounds. Reid scored 15 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor scored 12 points, four rebounds, five assists, and eight blocks.

Coahoma had two players to tally double-figured points. Strong led the Lady Tigers with 13 points and five rebounds. Tate worked up 11 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

"We did some good things, but we still got a lot to work on," said Coahoma Head Coach Stephanie Murphy. "When you're dealing with freshmen, you have to learn everything. I think this was a good weekend to get a split. We need these two weeks because we have work to do, and it's going to prove well for us."

Coahoma goes to (1-1) on the season. The Lady Tigers have their home opener against Arkansas Baptist on Saturday, November 16, 2019. The tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Pinnacle.
