CLARKSDALE- Coahoma Community College Women's Basketball hoped to give a great showing in front of their home crowd against Arkansas Baptist. The Lady Tigers worked hard for two weeks to figure out how the young squad could make progress. They made huge plays throughout the entire game against the Lady Buffs to cop an 89-62 home-opening victory at the Pinnacle.
Coahoma took an early 11-5 lead on a driving layup by
Amaria Strong.
Da'Nesha Wilson stepped up with five straight points to extend the first quarter lead to 18-11.
The Lady Tigers outscored Arkansas Baptist 25-11 in the second quarter.
Ayani Cockrell scored three consecutive driving layups.
Mary Wilkins closed out the first half with two successive driving layups. Coahoma took a commanding 43-22 lead at the half.
Two Lady Buff players were in double figured heroes. Kalia Walker scooped 20 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals for the Lady Buffs. Allison Steen totaled 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Five of the Lady Tigers finished with double digit points.
Jurnee McLaurin surfed up 20 points and seven rebounds, three assists, and two assists on the court. Wilkins mounted 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Richardson scored 11 points and three assists.
Valencia Watson rounded up 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Wilson pocketed 12 points and seven rebounds. Strong basketed 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
"I'm very thankful for the win. The kids played with toughness and grit," said Coahoma Head Coach
Stephanie Murphy. "Our offense was very balanced, and the bench did well. We have to get better on defense and minimize our turnovers."
The Lady Tigers goes to (2-1) on the season. The Lady Tigers will be playing at the East Central Classic in Decatur, Mississippi. For this sporting event, they will be in action against Meridian Community College on Monday, November 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. A subsequent matchup against East Central Community College is slated for Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at 1 p.m.
