CAMDEN, AR- Coahoma Community College Basketball got the 2019-20 season rolling with South Arkansas University Tech. Both teams played a very competitive first half. SAU began leading with 34-31 at the half. Coahoma drove an outstanding second half to outscore the Rockets 42-27, which rocketed to a stellar 73-61 season-opening Tiger-stamped victory in the Today's Power Tip-Off Classic.
South Arkansas Tech surged to a big lead of 41-31.
Cornelius Holly took over the 2nd half scoring 21 of his team-high 28 points and three assists. The Tigers took a 45-44 lead with 14 minutes left and never looked back.
Kenan Mitchell made two 3-pointers scoring 11 points and four rebounds.
Coahoma closed out the game with a 14-4 run to put the victory in reach. They had three players to score in double figures.
Jordan O'Neal gave a high-soaring performance resulting in 14 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
Two SAU Tech players scored in double figures. Jaland Mitchell led the Rockets with 17 points. Jerome Bynum accumulated 10 points. Immanuel Anderson added on nine points.
On the following day, the Tigers needed to settle down and focus on Connors State College (Okla). The Cowboys sparked a fiery start and ended up hurdling over a furious second half by the Tigers with an 86-77 victory.
Connors State played an outstanding first half, rousing fans with a 45-28 lead.
Coahoma hopped off the mat to battle back. The Mighty Tigers overcame a significant 57-38 deficit with 10 minutes left in the game.
The Tigers outscored the Cowboys 38-29 in the last nine minutes to cut the lead to 82-75.
Connors State made 30 of 36 free throws, including 10 of 12, to increase their chance at the win.
Three players totaled double figures for Connors State. Jahcoree Ealy led the Cowboys with 28 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Callen Haydon scored 20 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds. Caleb Riggs gathered 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
Four CCC players scored in double figures.
Cavin Paige led the Tigers with 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
Kendall Richardson contributed 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Mitchell offered 16 points and four rebounds.
Jamal Moore pocketed 11 points.
"You're going to go up or down in this league. You're going to face adversity, and you've just got to keep on fighting," said Coahoma Head Coach Michael Stringer. "I think we did a great job on how we handled things as a team. I'm excited so far about what kind of team we have."
Coahoma goes to (1-1) on the season. The Tigers have their home opener against the Royal Ambassadors on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Pinnacle.
