Lady Tigers’ Mistakes Prove Costly in Game Against Lady Rangers

CLARKSDALE- Coahoma Lady Tigers returned from the holiday break prepared to get back to work. The Tiger fans gathered to cheer on the players, relying on Head Coach Stephanie Murphy's reputable leadership skills to get Coahoma back in the MACJC North division race against crosstown rival Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Lady Tigers surged with a great start, but the Lady Rangers ended up making key runs to snatch a 59-50 victory.

Walneika Holmes set the tone with a three-pointer and layup giving Coahoma an early 13-4 lead. Northwest came back with a 6-0 run. Lindsey Hall knocked down a three-pointer cutting the lead to 13-10. Holmes answered with a three-pointer. Then Khiyee Robinson and Dzondria Young scored a pair of layups extending the lead to 21-13.

The Lady Tigers seized the 1st half when Ukari Pimpton scored a jumper extending the lead to 27-18. Northwest outscored Coahoma 12-2 in the last 6:21 of the 1st half. Nakia Walker scored a layup tying the game 27-27. The Lady Rangers took their first lead of the game with 30-29 on a three-pointer by Madison Pharr.

Coahoma started the 2nd half on an 8-0 run. Arianna Thigpen scored a pair of layups that gave Coahoma a 37-30 lead. Northwest took charge with a 12-0 run and never looked back. Sydney Liddell scored a pair of three-pointers giving Northwest the 46-39 lead.

The Lady Tigers made one more push in the 4th quarter as Holmes scored a layup cutting the lead to 48-44. The Lady Rangers were able to put the game out of reach with a three-pointer by Liddell.

Mallory Russell led Northwest with 11 points and six rebounds. Liddell finished with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Coahoma had three players to score in double figures. Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Young finished with 12 points, 17 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Thigpen scored 12 points and six rebounds.

"We had too many mental lapses and did not pay attention to the scouting report," said Murphy. "This was a game that was winnable for us. I'm very disappointed that we didn't get the job done."

Coahoma goes to 4-7, 0-2 for the MACJC North division, on the season. They will battle Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi to continue their run in the MACJC North division on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 at the Pinnacle.
