DECATUR- Coahoma's Lady Tigers ended up with a productive Thanksgiving week in square-offs against Meridian Community College and East Central Community College at the East Central Shootout in Decatur, Mississippi.
The Women's Basketball Team engaged in a close game against Meridian that came down to the wire. The Lady Tigers made some big stops in a 47-44 victory.
The Lady Tigers held Meridian (4-3) to 35 percent shooting (19-54). Mariah Collins led Meridian with 11 points and four steals.
Three players scored in double figures for Coahoma. Walneika Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 15 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Dzondria Young scored 13 points and 12 rebounds. Khiyee Robinson had 11 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
"I think this is a huge win for our program. We're super excited about our team right now," said Coahoma Head Coach Stephanie Murphy. "We played really good defensively. These games are going to help our team down the line."
The Lady Tigers were riding high on a three-game winning streak. East Central presented a bigger challenge for Coahoma. The Lady Warriors were undefeated and have a very deep bench that played a big factor in the game.
East Central (6-0) made big plays on both sides all night in a 75-62 victory. Two players scored in double figures. Breanna Riley led the Lady Warriors with 21 points, two rebounds and two steals. Whitney Waters scored 11 points and two rebounds.
Two star players on the Lady Tigers team scored in double figures. Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 25 points and seven rebounds. Robinson scored 19 points, including 3 three-pointers, three rebounds and two assists.
"They were better than us all around. We have to be more physical," said Murphy. "We stay in the game against an undefeated team at home. This performance shows the heart and character of our team. We will get much better from this."
Coahoma will have a chance at redemption when East Central comes to Clarksdale on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018. The tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Pinnacle.
Coahoma goes to 3-4 on the season. They will have their first MACJC North Division game of the 2018-19 season against Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 at the Pinnacle on the CCC campus.
