CCC Softball Pushes Nationally-Ranked Northeast To The Brink

Starting pitcher Trevino stars in Clarksdale

CLARKSDALE — CCC Softball pushed #16 Northeast Mississippi to the brink Wednesday in Clarksdale, falling 3-2 in a doubleheader finale that the team led 2-1 after 5. The impressive performance helped the team kick off its MACJC schedule, which it will continue Friday at East Central.

The Lady Tigers got a tremendous afternoon from starter Breianna Trevino, who allowed just 2 earned runs over 7 innings while striking out 3. Ann Jones and Shalottie Dawson each picked up multiple hits for CCC, and Alicia Witherspoon reached base 3 times, including on a single to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the 5th. CCC seized the lead at 2-1 before Northeast retook a narrow advantage in the 6th, an edge they would hold to move to 14-4 and 2-0 in conference play.

The closely-contested 2nd game vs. a nationally-ranked opponent marks major progress for head coach Erin Smith's team. After suffering a narrow 2-0 defeat this past weekend vs. Bossier, the team seems poised to grab its first W of the season soon.

CCC takes on East Central Friday in Decatur. Updates from the doubleheader vs. the Lady Warriors will be available on Twitter at @CoahomaCCSports. First pitch at ECCC is slated for 1 pm.
