SHREVEPORT, Louisiana - Kayla Rogers poured in an astounding 40 points to accompany 11 rebounds in leading the Lady Tigers to an opening game victory vs. Southwestern Christian College at the Southern Classic Friday. Nikerria Harris added 20 points and 13 boards of her own in helping the squad secure its first victory of 2016-17.
Rogers came out hot early, pouring in 21 points in the first half to help the Lady Tigers' establish a 47-27 advantage going to the break. She would finish 17 of 26 from the field, notching her 40th point in the game's closing seconds. 5 of her 11 rebounds came on the offensive end, and she added 4 assists and 2 steals to the double-double.
Rogers, Harris, and Melvinisha Jenkins (10) all finished with double-digit rebounds in helping the team accumulate a season-high 70 in the ballgame. Jenkins narrowly missed a triple-double of her own, going off for 6 points, 10 boards and a personal season-high 9 assists.
Tomaja Shaw added 12 points, and Diamond Love chipped in 7 as the team cruised to the 30-point win. The victory was the 1st of the season for the Lady Tigers and the loss was the 4th of the season for Southwestern Christian. SWCC was led by Kierra Calloway, who netted 21 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers battle Southern University-Shreveport Saturday afternoon at 4 pm to conclude their play at the Classic.
