CLARKSDALE - The CCC Lady Tiger basketball team got 20 points and 16 boards from Eugenia Gilliam but could not overcome the NWCC Lady Rangers in The Pinnacle on Tuesday, falling 81-69.
The Lady Rangers rode into town looking for their 10th win in the 2015-16 season and ran into a Lady Tiger team ready to fight. A tight first quarter ended with Northwest up 20-18, and the visitors took a 41-37 lead into the break, but the Lady Tigers hung tough and put up a terrific fight against one of the top teams in the conference.
The second half belonged firmly to the Lady Rangers though. They began the second stanza on an 11-0 run and never looked back, earning their 4th win in the MACJC by opening the lead to a dozen by the final buzzer.
The 20-point, 16-rebound performance represented the 5th straight game with a double-double for the Coahoma County grad, Gilliam. Carnita Hammond added a strong performance, pouring in 11 points and grabbing 9 boards, and Melvinisha Jenkins scored 9 while grabbing 11 off the glass.
Northwest was led by Averyale Joy, who scored 19, and Sara Lytle, who canned 18 of her own. Braylee Landreth grabbed a dozen rebounds for the Lady Rangers.
CCC (2-13, 0-4 MACJC North) will look to bounce back at Northeast on Thursday. Tip in Booneville is slated for 5:30 pm.
