CLARKSDALE —Coahoma Community College was hoping to start the season off with a win on Thursday night in front of a packed James E. Miller Stadium crowd. However, the Tigers ran into a tough Pearl River defense and turned the ball over four times stumbling out of the gate with a 32-6 loss in the opener.
The Tigers crowd did get treated to some excitement watching quarterback Dom Marino (R-Fr. Sarasota, FL) scramble behind the line most of the night and making some stellar plays with his feet. The redshirt freshman out of Florida finished the game completing 18-of-33 passes for 247 yards and throwing for one score.
Marino also scrambled for 59 yards on the ground, but lost the majority of those yards on tackles for losses.
Pearl River got out early scoring on their second their second play from scrimmage, an 85-yard touchdown run (PAT failed), and followed up six minutes later with a 35-yard touchdown pass on their sixth offensive play to jump out to a 13-0 lead.
The Tigers would claw back almost immediately putting together a four-play, 95-yard drive that was capped off by Marino's 18-yard hookup with wide receiver Devonta Jones (Fr. Morton, MS). Kian Richard's (Fr. Church Point, LA) extra point failed and the Tigers trailed 13-6.
That's as close as the Tigers would get while PRCC would find the end zone two more times in the first and third quarters. The Wildcats also kicked a 29-yard field goal, and trapped Marino in the end zone in the third quarter for a safety.
Jones would finish the night with two catches for 49 yards; while the Tigers receive corps was led by Calais Dunn (So. Friars Point, MS) who had five catches for 85 yards. William Payne (Fr. Potts Camp, MS) added five catches for 45 yards.
Defensively for Coahoma, linebacker Marquze Little (So. Port Gibson, MS) led the Tigers with 11 total tackles (5 solo). Gabriel Baldwin (So. Olive Branch, MS) added six total tackles and Quartez Roby (So. Cleveland, MS) and Jacorey Douglas (Fr. Starkville, MS) each added five.
Three of Roby's tackles were for a loss (total of 21 yards), and Antowyne Gibson (Fr. Jonestown, MS) had two tackles for a loss (4 total) for a combined 34 yards.
The Tigers will travel to East Central Community College this Thursday to take on the Warriors (1-0) who hosted Mississippi Delta Community College in Week 1 and posted a 34-0 shutout against the Trojans. Kickoff is schedule for 6:30 p.m. this Thursday in Decatur, MS.
