Baseball Tigers Earn First Victory At Pearl River

Team rebounds from tough Game 1 to down PRCC in DH

POPLARVILLECCC baseball scored a major victory over the weekend, upsetting Pearl River CC in Game 2 of its doubleheader in Poplarville. Garrett Short twirled 6.1 innings  of 6-hit ball and Tyler Crouch drove in 3, including the game winner, to help CCC pick up its 1st victory of the year.

Things did not start well for the Tigers at PRCC. In Game 1, it was all Pearl River. The home team tagged Tiger starter Hunter Collins for 5 runs in 3+ innings of work. Collins allowed just 1 hit in his 3+ innings of work, walking 5 and hitting 2. He also suffered through 2 Tiger errors behind him.

Collins was driven from the game in the 4th with CCC trailing 5-1. Pearl River would tag his relievers Jonathan Oglesby and Corey O'Brien for 8 more, going on to win by a final of 13-1. Collins took the loss, while PRCC starter John Carter Sanner went the distance for the Wildcats, limiting Coahoma to just 6 scattered hits. He struck out 12 to earn his 2nd victory of the year.

Caleb Lindsey drove in the only run of the game for CCC. His 4th RBI in 2015 came in the 4th when he doubled to left off Sanner to plate Darian Bester.

The CCC squad demonstrated tremendous resiliency though, buckling down to make Game 2 its most exciting contest of the year. Garrett Short took to the hill for CCC. After allowing 2 hits and a run in the 1st, Short zeroed in and kept the PRCC squad off the board for the next 5 innings.

The CCC bats were initially limited by Pearl River starter Reagan Wease, who allowed just 6 hits in 5.2 IP. Trailing 1-0 heading into the 7th and final inning though, the visitors finally found their stroke. Facing closer Derrick Mount, CCC managed to get two aboard in front of Tyler Crouch. Crouch, who had been hitless up to this point in the doubleheader, delivered when it mattered most, singling home Caleb Lindsey and pinch runner Luis Colon with a liner up the middle.

Pearl River managed to score an unearned run on Short in the 7th to tie the game at 2, but relief man Adam McPhail softened the blow by escaping a two-on, one-out jam to ensure extra innings.

CCC retook the lead in the 9th on a 2-RBI double by Zach Morris, only to have Pearl River once again even the score in the bottom of the 9th.

With the game tied at 4, PRCC seemed on the verge of winning it off McPhail, who loaded the bases with 1 out. Crouch proved to be the hero for the 2nd time though, miraculously snagging a hard-hit line drive off the bat of Jordan Mullis and doubling Tamaz Conerly off 3rd base to end the Wildcat threat and force a 10th frame.

Already a hero twice over, Crouch got one more chance to push CCC toward the win. The West Memphis native returned to the plate in the the top of the 10th with 2 men on. For the 3rd and final time, he proved to be the CCC savior, doubling to left center to score TJ Knowles

This time, there would not be another comeback for the home team. McPhail would preserve the 5-4 advantage with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 10th.The upset victory moved CCC to 1-1 in conference play.

McPhail got the win, while reliever Trey Grice took the loss for PRCC, who now stand at 7-9 in 2015. The contest was the third 1-run affair that CCC has been involved in this season.
