Tigers Drop Homecoming Matchup With SUSLA

Smith Jags play spoiler in The Pinnacle

CLARKSDALE—The CCC men fell to Southern University-Shreveport 67-56 Saturday. It was the second time this season that the Port City Jags were able to best the Tigers.

Willie Bronson led the offensive attack for CCC. The freshman from Belzoni poured in 12 points in just 21 minutes of work. It was the 7th time in the last 8 games and the 9th time overall that Bronson has scored in double figures this season.

Bronson's last-second 3 tied the game at 32 just before halftime. But the 2nd period belonged to the Jags. The Shreveport squad outshot the Tigers 50% to 31% from the field after the break and won the 2nd half 35-24. They were led by big man Patrick Smith, who finished with 16 points and 9 boards in 37 minutes.

The Jags, who defeated CCC 78-69 in Shreveport on November 7th, outworked CCC on the glass, winning the rebound battle 39-26.  Smith was particularly effective on the attacking end, grabbing 4 offensive boards and giving the Tigers problems inside.

For stretches, it appeared that CCC was the superior team. They won the turnover battle by a very solid margin of +10. The Tigers capitalized on those SUSLA mistakes for 21 points. But in the end, SUSLA managed to reel off a 17-8 run late in the second half for a more-comfortable win.

The non-conference game featured plenty of festivities as fans celebrated CCC's basketball homecoming. Cameron Monix and Ariel Jones were named Mr. and Ms. CCC Basketball, and at halftime, Carla Lucas-Whitfield (class of 1990) and Charles Presley (class of 1988) were inducted into the Coahoma Community College Hall of Fame.

The Tigers are back in action Tuesday in Senatobia. They take on the Northwest MS CC Rangers at 7 pm. It will be the 1st time the two teams have met this season.
