Lady Tigers Outduel Lady Buffs, Earn Second Win Of Season

Five players score in double figures to aid in win

The CCC women's basketball team earned its second win of the 2014-15 season Tuesday night by defeating Arkansas Baptist 86-81. The Lady Tigers had five players score in double figures. Ariel Jones poured in a game-high 21 and Erica Collins had another monster game, posting 18 points and 12 boards in just over 20 minutes of work to help CCC to the win.

The Lady Tigers started off hot, shooting 58% from the field and 70% from the line in the first half. They began the game on a 24-10 run that put the Lady Buffs in a big hole early. Gabrielle Gilbert was particularly impressive in the first period, scoring 14 of her 17 points before the break. Baptist responded late to cut the lead to 3 heading into the locker rooms. The advantage, though, still lay with the Lady Tigers.

Baptist challenged hard in the second half and, with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game, managed to make it a 71-71 contest. They took a narrow lead shortly thereafter. But the ladies of CCC would not go down quietly on their home floor.

With under two minutes to go, Josta Totten knocked down a couple of key free throws to reclaim the lead. A minute later, she dished to Ariel Jones for a layup that rebuilt the Lady Tiger lead to 3. The Lady Buffs continued to fight, but the night belonged to the Lady Tigers. Amber Sisk buried two chances from the line in the game's waning seconds to seal the victory for CCC.

Sisk finished with 15 points, none bigger than her free throws near the end. Totten finished with 10 to go along with 6 assists. The Lady Tigers outrebounded Arkansas Baptist 46-28 overall and 12-6 on the offensive end. They converted those offensive boards into 19 second-chance points.

CCC travels to Decatur Monday to take on East Central CC in a rematch of the season opener. Tipoff in that game is slated for 5:30 pm.
