Tigers unable to earn Homecoming win vs. Itawamba

Turnovers doom CCC in MACJC North contest

CLARKSDALE — Coahoma Community College got out to a quick start Saturday afternoon in front of a Homecoming crowd of more than 3,000 that packed James E. Miller Stadium and thousands more that cheered the Tigers outside at their various tailgating spots. The crowd support however wouldn't be enough to motivate Coahoma as they dropped the MACJC North Division contest, 47-14.

The Tigers looked strong early, scoring on their second possession when running back Christian Williams punched the ball into the end zone on a five-yard burst up the middle. However, Itawamba would score the next 30 points, taking advantage of Coahoma mistakes including a pair of fumbles, an interception and a mishandled punt return turning the contest into a rout.

The Tigers were their own worst enemy during the contest and wouldn't get on the board again until the clock read :48 left in the third quarter. That score came courtesy of Quarterback Mickey Ridley, Jr. who would scramble around the right side of the line and out-hustled the defense down the sideline for a 25-yard rushing TD.

Despite being pressured heavily throughout the afternoon, Ridley would manage 214 yards through the air although just 13 on the ground. His receivers Marcel Williams and Damecio Ewing would finish with 70 and 80 yards receiving respectively.

The Tigers offense finished with a total of 234 yards on the day — just 10 net yards on the ground, while ICC racked up 466 yards of total offense, 138 of those on the ground.
Gabriel Baldwin led the Tigers defense with eight total tackles (5 unassisted) while Devin Williams, Quartez Roby and Rashaun Weekly each finished with seven.

The Tigers will return to James E. Miller Stadium this Thursday evening playing host to MACJC South opponent Southwest Mississippi Community College. The Bears have just one win this season and are coming off a 40-20 loss to Hinds Community College.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
