Tiger Football Falls At Holmes
Goodman— The Holmes CC football team made sure that it was a joyous homecoming in Goodman on Saturday. The Bulldogs used four blocked kicks and a huge first half explosion to help rout the visiting Tigers by a final of 64-6. It was the eighth loss of the season for Coahoma.
Holmes put up 27 first quarter points, starting with a 69-yard touchdown dash by RB Mitchell Cunningham on the Bulldogs' first play from scrimmage. Holmes added another two touchdowns in the second quarter to build their locker room lead to an insurmountable 41-0.
The furious Holmes assault picked up where it left off after the break. De'MonTerius Kendrick ran the opening kickoff of the second half back 86 yards for another score.Â
The Bulldogs were particularly effective on the ground, slashing their way through Tiger defenders all night. Cunningham and Dre Massey each finished with over 100 yards rushing, and as a team, Holmes finished with 416 yards on the ground from scrimmage.
The Tigers narrowly avoided the shutout by staging a 10 play, 76 yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter. With the clock ticking away, Anthony Mitchell, Jr. hit Greg Johnson in the front corner of the end zone for a 34 yard scoring pass with 1:13 left in the game. Unfortunately, the stifling Holmes' special teams defense blocked Cody Spears' extra point, allowing Broderick Fordham to scoop it up at his own 7 and race all the way down field for a Holmes two point conversion as time expired.Â
The Bulldog defense had stymied the Tiger kicking attack all night. The Bulldogs managed to block three of Spears' punts before batting down his last-minute extra point attempt as well.Â
Holmes recorded 5 sacks in the game and limited CCC to just just 21 yards rushing and 79 yards through the air. The Tigers did convert 10 first downs though—five of them on Holmes penalties.Â
Tyler Beard led the Tiger defense in tackles, recording one solo and five assists to pace the team. Devin Williams and Cedric Blue each got in on five tackles themselves.Â
The Tigers close out the season at home October 23rd against Northwest Community College. The Rangers lost 49-0 lost to East Mississippi CC last Thursday. They are currently 2-5.
The game will be the last of the season for the Tigers. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm on Thursday. It will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night at James E. Miller Stadium. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support.
