03.05

The CCC men's basketball team won its first two games in the NJCAA DI Region 23 Men's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers won 71-69 at Southwest Mississippi before winning 71-67 at Itawamba. However, Coahoma's run ended on Saturday night against Meridian at Mississippi College in the semifinals.

CCC entered the tournament as an 11 seed. The Tigers picked up a win over sixth-seeded SMCC and three-seeded ICC before falling to seven-seeded MCC.

The 2022-23 season has been a historical one for the CCC men's basketball program. For the first time in at least the past 10 years, the Maroon and White picked up a double-digit number of wins.

Coahoma picked up wins against nine of the other 14 teams in the MACCC. The Tigers defeated Northwest Mississippi twice, Northeast Mississippi, East Central, Hinds, Jones College, Mississippi Delta, Pearl River, Southwest Mississippi, and Itawamba.

In addition to those accomplishments is obviously the postseason success. Out of the 19 teams in the region, CCC was one of the last four competing for the regional title.

As for Saturday's game itself, the Tigers trailed 40-19 at halftime. Coahoma trimmed the lead to single digits in the second half, but Meridian won 80-72.

CCC's Jaqai Murray and O'zhell Jackson each scored in double figures in the second half. Murray tallied 13 points, while Jackson registered 24.

The Tigers finish the season 15-12 (6-8 MACCC); MCC is 19-8 (8-6 MACCC).
