Tigers Have Big Victory Against Rockets on Sophomore Night

CLARKSDALE- The Coahoma Tigers and the South Arkansas Univ. Tech Rockets battled for the second time this season on Sophomore Night at the Pinnacle. The Tigers made big plays all night and outplayed the Rockets in a 66-58 victory.

Both teams battled in the 1st half. SAU Tech got things going with consecutive dunks by Immanuel Anderson and Jaland Mitchell. The Rockets took an early 10-8 lead.

Cortez McCarty stepped up for Coahoma with consecutive baskets. The Tigers took the lead 12-10.

Mitchell answered with back to back baskets giving the Rockets a 14-12 lead.

The Tigers had a secret weapon that stepped up and had an excellent performance. Troy Johnson exploded, scoring 10 points in the 1st half. Coahoma took a 33-21 lead at the half.

Cornelius Holly got the Tigers going in the 2nd half with a three-pointer. Coahoma had it's biggest lead at 36-21.

The Rockets came back with a three-pointer cutting the lead to 36-26.

Coahoma answers with consecutive baskets by Jordan O'Neal extending the lead to 40-26.

SAU Tech kept chipping the lead left and right. Mitchell, Sheldon Stevens, and Milan Lester scored driving layups cutting the lead to 50-46 with 6:21 remaining.

The Tigers put the game out of reach when O'Neal got a powerful dunk. Kendall Richardson knocked down a three-pointer in his last game at The Pinnacle.

SAU Tech (17-12) had three players that scored in double figures. Mitchell led the Rockets with 21 points, two rebounds, and two blocks. Stevens and Treyon Johnson each finished with 10 points and three rebounds.

Coahoma had two players that scored in double figures. O'Neal led the Tigers with 18 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Johnson finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. McCarty scored nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Coahoma Men's Basketball had a ceremony honoring their graduating sophomores. Cornelius Holly, Kendall Richardson, and Tyler Berryhill are the graduating sophomores on this year's team.

Holly averaged 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists for the Tigers. His best performance was against SAU Tech in the season opener on Nov. 1, 2019. He scored 28 points, four rebounds, and three assists in a 73-61 victory.

Richardson averaged 8 points and two assists for the Tigers. His best performance was against Mississippi Delta on Jan. 27, 2020. He scored 19 points, two rebounds, and two assists in an 83-78 victory.

Berryhill averaged two points and two rebounds for the Tigers. His best performance was against Royal Ambassadors on Nov. 9, 2019. He scored 10 points and five assists in a 122-65 victory.

Coahoma goes to 8-14 on the season.
