FULTON- Coahoma Mighty Tigers slowly heated up after a slow start against Itawamba Community College on Tuesday night. They picked themselves up off of the mat and fought back until the final sound of the clock.
Kendall Richardson missed a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. The Indians survived the comeback and pulled off a 67-64 victory.
Itawamba struck up a hot start with Brandon Brown scoring consecutive three-pointers. They took an early 21-9 lead.
The Indians continued to pour it on with a driving layup by Kendricus Carlton. Itawamba achieved their biggest lead of the game 32-15 with 7:06 remaining in the first half.
Coahoma mounted a big comeback, outscoring Itawamba 19-7 to seal the first half. Richardson inserted consecutive three-pointers that cut the lead to 39-34 at the half.
Coahoma maintained its comeback status in the second half, with a 13-3 run.
Cavin Paige and
Cortez McCarty scored consecutive three-pointers to give the Tigers their first lead of the game 49-46 with 10 minutes remaining.
Itawamba answered with a three-pointer by Rance Champ and a driving layup by Carlton. The Indians took a 61-54 lead.
Coahoma came back one more time when Paige and
Cornelius Holly scored consecutive layups to push the lead to 61-60 with 1:23 remaining.
The Tigers had a chance at the lead, but Carlton got a steal and made a driving layup to take the lead to 63-60 with 48.7 remaining.
Three players from Itawamba (6-8, 2-2 MACJC North) climbed to double figures. Brown led the Indians with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Ma'Darius Hobson scored 16 points, eight rebounds, six steals, and three assists. Champ finished with 10 points and two assists.
Coahoma had three players to finish in double figures. Paige topped the pack with 18 points. McCarty stacked 17 points, including four three-pointers. Richardson collected 11 points.
Coahoma goes to 6-9 (1-4 MACJC North) on the season. The Tigers will battle crosstown rival Mississippi Delta Community College in an MACJC North matchup. The game is set to be held on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at the Pinnacle. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch as well as on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
