Lady Tigers Come up Short against Lady Rangers

SENATOBIA- The Lady Tigers were riding high on a three-game winning streak. They were looking to keep a tight grip on their victorious standing against Northwest Mississippi Community College. The court was heated with intensity throughout the game. The Lady Tigers made huge plays in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Northwest threw in some critical plays for a 73-69 victory Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.

Coahoma's challenge was to overcome a double-digit deficit (63-53) with 3:42 remaining. They outscored the Lady Rangers 11-1 to force overtime. Iitasha Paty scored a driving layup to tie the game 64-64 with 29 seconds remaining. Northwest had a chance to win on the last possession in regulation. Ariel Tunstall missed a jumper at the buzzer.

In overtime, Northwest tallied their first six points to take a 70-64 lead with 2:55 remaining. Tunstall, Mallory Russell, and Tamarah Sykes blazed the basket with driving layups for the Lady Rangers.

Coahoma finally got things going with critical scoring by Mary Wilkins and Jurnee McLaurin, cutting the lead to 70-69. A missed jumper by Wilkins unplugged Coahoma's shot at the win. Tunstall then rebounded and made two free-throws to put the game away.

The Lady Tigers laced up a good start with an early 12-8 lead. Ayani Cockrell and Brailyn Tate pounded the paint with strong layups. McLaurin stepped up early with some driving layups.

Northwest bounced back by outscoring Coahoma 6-2 to tie the game 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Rangers dominated most of the second quarter until Valencia Watson changed the outcome. Watson hit a 3-pointer to give Coahoma a 28-26 lead. McLaurin followed up with the same move. The Lady Tigers led with 35-33 at the half.

The Lady Tigers built up a great start to the third quarter with a 7-0 run. McLaurin and Watson made a pair of driving layups. Coahoma had their most significant lead of the game 42-35, with 7:42 remaining.

Northwest answered by topping Coahoma 13-3 at the close of the third quarter. Claire Fleming and Zanaiyah Daniel scored a pair of layups to give Northwest the lead 48-45.

Two players from Northwest Mississippi (8-4, 1-1 MACJC North) scored in double figures. Russell led the Lady Rangers with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Tunstall finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Sykes pocketed nine points and five rebounds. Fleming also tallied 9 points along with three rebounds.

Three Lady Tigers scored in double figures. McLaurin climbed to 23 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals during the matchup. Wilkins finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Cockrell scored 10 points and seven rebounds.

Coahoma goes to 6-5 (1-1 MACJC North) on the season. The Lady Tigers will conclude their three-game road trip against East Mississippi Community College on Monday, January 13, 2020. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Keyes T. Currie Coliseum in Scooba, Mississippi.
