SENATOBIA- The Mighty Tigers were looking to recharge for their MACJC North division play against Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Rangers led throughout the game, but the Tigers performed a last-minute miracle to grasp a 69-67 victory on Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest led 60-55 with 7:44 remaining in the game.
Jordan O'Neal stepped up by making a 3-pointer that cut the lead to 60-58.
Cavin Paige came alive with four points, including a jumper to tie the game 65-65. O'Neal came up big, basketing one of two free throw attempts. Then
Kenan Mitchell made a driving layup, which gave Coahoma the lead 68-65 with 1:22 remaining. Coahoma led twice during the game.
Coahoma worked up a sluggish start to the game. Jakobi Pearson steamed up a hot start for Northwest by scoring a pair of driving layups with a three-pointer. Northwest took an early 12-4 lead. Pearson contributed 10 of the Rangers' first 12 points.
O'Neal and
Jamal Moore jumped the lead to 12-8 with a pair of layups to give Coahoma a bounce back. The Rangers responded with an 11-2 run. Tomias Brand worked up a slam dunk that extended the lead to 23-10.
Coahoma came back with an 11-2 run.
Kendall Richardson scored a driving layup to move the lead to 25-21 with 6:33 left in the first half.
The Rangers outscored Coahoma 15-9 to close out the first half. Pearson hit a jumper with seven seconds remaining. O'Neal answered with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Northwest took a 40-30 lead at the half.
Coahoma clinched its first victory against Northwest since 2013. The Tigers defeated the Rangers 87-84 on January 31, 2013, at the Pinnacle.
Northwest Mississippi (9-3, 1-1 MACJC North) had three players to score in double figures. Pearson led the Rangers with 23 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. James Richards tallied 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. R. J. Duhart collected 11 points and five rebounds.
Coahoma had three players to score in double figures. O'Neal totaled 29 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals for the Tigers. Richardson finished with the second highest—15 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Cornelius Holly scored 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Coahoma goes to 5-6 (1-1 MACJC North) on the season. The Tigers will conclude their three-game road trip against East Mississippi Community College on Monday, January 13, 2020. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Keyes T. Currie Coliseum in Scooba, Mississippi. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch and on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
