Coahoma Holds Off Northeast in ‘Battle of the Tigers’

BOONEVILLE- Coahoma Community College and Northeast Mississippi Community College entered the MACJC North Division play by revisiting their rivalry against each other. The CCC Lady Tigers was in control for majority of the game. Northeast Mississippi made a massive comeback in the second half, but Coahoma held on to clutch a 67-65 victory Monday night at the Bonner Arnold Coliseum.

Jurnee McLaurin scored a driving layup to give Coahoma an early 7-4 lead. Then, McLaurin scored five consecutive points to extend the lead to 30-19.

Northeast got back in the game when Tekeria Newson scored on a jump shot. Then Quintonya Webster made a driving layup at the buzzer, which cut the lead to 36-26 at the half.

Coahoma went on an 11-3 run to begin the third quarter. Iitasha Paty scored a driving layup, igniting a commanding 47-31 lead.

Northeast outscored Coahoma 26-17 in the fourth quarter. Newson scored consecutive layups, and Ke'Mara Atterberry made two successive 3-pointers that made the game very interesting in the end.

Coahoma has pocketed its first victory over Northeast Mississippi since 2014. The CCC Lady Tigers defeated Northeast 64-59 on February 13, 2014.

Northeast Mississippi (1-7, 0-1 MACJC North) had three players who calculated double figures. Newson accumulated 25 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Atterberry concluded the game with 12 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers. Webster scored 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Two Lady Tigers scooped double-figured points. McLaurin led the Lady Tigers with 14 points and two rebounds. Brailyn Tate scored 11 points and eight rebounds. Mary Wilkins totaled eight points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

Coahoma goes to 4-4, 1-0 MACJC North on the season. The Lady Tigers will play their last home game of 2019 against Baton Rouge Community College on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Pinnacle. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch and also on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
