Northeast Survives Against Coahoma in ‘Battle of the Tigers’

BOONEVILLE-  Coahoma Community College and Northeast Mississippi Community College opened the MACJC North Division play by renewing their rivalry on the hardwood. The two Tiger teams battled each other to the end. Northeast Mississippi made a huge second half run to gain a 70-63 victory Monday night at the Bonner Arnold Coliseum.

DeAnthony Tipler scored consecutive layups that gave Northeast an early 9-3 lead. Then, the Northeast Tigers went on an 8-0 run, extending the lead to 17-5. Braxton Pritchard and Jayven Humphrey made a pair of layups.  

Two Mighty Tigers, Jamal Moore and Kenan Mitchell, reciprocated the layups. The lead was cut to 21-14. Northeast responded with a 3-pointer by Tipler plus a driving layup by JonDarius Warren. They had their most significant lead of the game 28-16.

Coahoma ended up outscoring Northeast 13-4 in the last 4:47 of the first half. Mitchell, Cornelius Holly, and Cavin Paige each made a 3-pointer. Paige got a steal off Tipler and made a 3-pointer past half court at the buzzer. Northeast achieved a 32-29 lead at the half.

The CCC Tigers stirred a great start up to the second half when Cortez McCarty scored a 3-pointer that tied the game 32-32. Then, Holly inserted a 3-pointer, and Tiras Bolden scored a driving layup. Coahoma took their first lead of the game 41-36.

The game swayed back and forth throughout the second half. Northeast topped Coahoma 15-8 in the last 6:22 of the game. Tipler scored a 3-pointer, and Warren followed up with a driving layup. The Tigers took a commanding lead 70-60 with 29 seconds remaining.

Three NECC players (9-0, 1-0 MACJC North) excelled with double figures. Isaac Chatman led the Tigers with 18 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Tipler finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Jalen Perkins tallied 10 points and five rebounds.

Holly calculated 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists for Coahoma. Bolden ended with nine points and seven rebounds. Mitchell scored eight points and six rebounds. Jordan O'Neal collected eight points and three rebounds.

Coahoma goes to 3-5, 0-1 MACJC North on the season. The Mighty Tigers will have their final home game of the year 2019, just ahead of the winter holidays, against Baton Rouge Community College on Saturday, December 14, 2019. The men's game tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Pinnacle. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch as well as on the College's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
