CLARKSDALE- Coahoma's Lady Tigers were looking to keep up the good work after a four-game winning streak, but the Lady Jaguars of Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) came to town looking for payback. Coahoma defeated the Lady Jaguars 63-53 last year on Nov. 10, 2018, for their first victory of the season. The Lady Tigers played an inspiring second half that resulted in a 61-43 homecoming victory.
Southern-Shreveport (1-10) took an early 8-2 lead on a pair of layups by Aloyna Lewis. Coahoma came back with a pair of layups by
Dzondria Young and
Arianna Thigpen to cut the lead to 8-6. The Lady Jaguars answered with a three-pointer by Sha'tera Batton, which extended the lead to 11-8.
Coahoma went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. Young and
Walneika Holmes scored a pair of layups. Batton and Keymya Burkhalter knocked down a pair of three-pointers and gave Southern-Shreveport a 26-23 lead.
Holmes and
Khiyee Robinson scored a couple of layups that led to the Lady Tigers outscoring the Lady Jaguars 9-2 in the last 5:09 of the 1st half. The Lady Tigers took a 32-28 lead at the half.
Coahoma were deeply inspired when they witnessed the 1988 Lady Tigers team's induction into the Coahoma Community College Athletics Hall of Fame. The Coahoma Lady Tigers won the NJCAA Region 23 Championship in 1988. They were honored with a presentation of the championship banner.
The Lady Tigers took control in the 3rd quarter with a pair of layups by Holmes. They were driven to a lead of 43-33.
Southern-Shreveport made an early comeback in the 4th quarter with a three-pointer made by Michele Williams to set the score at 47-43.
Coahoma put the game away with a 14-0 run. Robinson scored a pair of layups, that allowed them to end the game as victors.
Three Southern-Shreveport players scored in double figures. Lewis led the Lady Jaguars with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Batton finished with 10 points and four steals. Whitney Aubrey came out with 10 points and four rebounds.
Coahoma had three players to end the game in double figures. Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Robinson pitched in 15 points and six rebounds. Young scored 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Coahoma goes to 5-9 on the season.
