CLARKSDALE- Coahoma and East Mississippi Community College were caught in a log jam for 2nd place in the MACJC North division. Both teams played tremendous defense in a game that went down to the wire. Dwayne Cox scored the game-winning layup with 26 seconds left. Coahoma could have tied the game, but Tiras Bolden missed a jumper at the buzzer giving the Lions a 52-50 victory.
East Mississippi (8-6, 2-1 MACJC North) got off to a fast start 8-2. Markedric Bell scored six of the first 8 points. Terry Williams stepped up and made a three-pointer that cut the lead to 8-5. The Lions answered with consecutive layups by Dewayne Cox and Darrious Agnew to extend the lead to 12-5.
Coahoma bounced back with consecutive three-pointers by Williams and Robert Boyd. The game was then tied at 13-13. The Lions responded with a three-pointer by Bell, taking the lead to 21-15.
East Mississippi closed out the 1st half with a jumper by Malik Harper. The Lions led 25-22 at the half.
The Lions set the tone in the 2nd half with a three-pointer by Robert Davis and extended the lead to 28-22. Coahoma came back with consecutive baskets by Boyd and Denori Berry, tying the game at 28-28.
Noel Jones knocked down a three-pointer giving East Mississippi a 35-30 lead. Coahoma continued the battle with a three-pointer by Williams, cutting the lead to 37-35.
Agnew's layup put East Mississippi in the lead with 39-35. Williams and Cornelius Holly scored consecutive baskets giving the Tigers the lead 43-41 with 7:56 remaining.
Two EMCC players finished in double figures. Cox led the Lions with 14 points and six rebounds. Bell scored 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
Williams led Coahoma with 20 points, three rebounds and two assists. Berry came out with eight points, four rebounds and four blocks.
Coahoma goes to 4-8, 1-2 MACJC North on the season. The Mighty Tigers will take on Holmes in an MACJC North division game on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 in Goodman, Mississippi.
