BOONEVILLE—The Tigers closed out their 2014-15 season with a loss to Northeast in Booneville on Saturday. The game came down to the final seconds, but in the end, NEMCC managed to stave off a furious CCC comeback and down the visitors, 77-74.
Northeast was the stronger team at the beginning of the game. They held CCC to just 9 field goals in the 1st half while knocking down 5 3's to build a 33-21 lead heading into the break.
But it was Coahoma's turn to come to life in th 2nd half. Michael West III and Cameron Monix, who combined for 0 points in the 1st half, teamed up for 31 in the 2nd to get CCC back in the contest.
With just under 5 to go and CCC still trailing by 12, Monix, West, and LaDarius Jones locked in, coming together to reel off a 12-5 run. The incredible stretch was capped by a pair of clutch Monix free throws that tied the game at 74 with about 20 seconds remaining.
Unfortunately, Coahoma was not able to get a stop on the other end. Dimario Jackson, a sophomore guard who finished with 25 points and 5 assists, was able to drive on the other end, finishing an and-1 layup to make it 77-74 with just 8.8 seconds to go.
CCC had one final opportunity to tie the game after the made Jackson free throw. Pushing in transition, Willie Bronson fired a pass ahead to West, who found space for a 3-point attempt as time ticked away. His shot was a little off the mark though, sending CCC to its 5th loss by 5 or fewer points this season.
LaDarius Jones finished as Coahoma's leading scorer. He had 18, while Monix finished with 17 and West III ended up with 14.
With the win, Northeast, which had already locked down the #3 seed in the MACJC North prior to the game, earned its 16th victory of the year.
CCC finishes the season 1-21 overall and 1-16 in conference play.
